Sustainability

At David Collins Studio, we adopt a definition of luxury that promotes artisan craftsmanship, quality materials and local sourcing to deliver interiors that are designed for longevity. We marry beauty with functionality and operational efficiency, aiming to create designs that are environmentally conscious. We are proud to partner with clients and suppliers who share our commitment to continually improving sustainable credentials and reducing our environmental impact.

We are proud to be one of Positive Luxury’s Real Changemakers, having been awarded Butterfly Mark Certification in December 2023.

Who are Positive Luxury?

Positive Luxury are the leading sustainability experts for the global luxury industry. They provide expertise and a clear framework by which to improve luxury businesses. Their purpose is to transform the luxury industry through the Butterfly Methodology.

Introduced by Positive Luxury in 2011, The Butterfly Mark Certification is an independent verification of ESG credentials within the global luxury sector.

We Are Real Changemakers

We are proud to be one of Positive Luxury’s Real Changemakers, having been awarded Butterfly Mark Certification in December 2023.

The Butterfly Mark is an independent, globally respected trust mark awarded to luxury brands, retailers and suppliers that meet the highest standards of verified sustainability performance.

Certification is earned through a rigorous, independent ESG+ assessment, underpinned by the latest international standards, global legislation and best practice principles.

A company must achieve a minimum score of 50% in each of the Environment, Social and Governance pillars to meet the minimum standards for Butterfly Mark Certification.

To deliver our Environmental and Social vision, we have been working to implement a sustainability strategy based around three pillars:

Safeguarding The Environment & Natural Resources

We are working towards carbon neutrality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Studio’s activities, and reducing our internal waste arising.

Since 2020 the Studio has calculated is carbon footprint based on its studio activities and business travel and will continue to reduce this through a carbon management plan, investing in nature-based solutions to remove carbon, restore nature and support local communities.

In 2022 we offset 110% of our emissions and all the projects that we support are available on the Earthly website.

Guiding Sustainability in Projects and Amongst Suppliers

We have implemented a sustainable sourcing programme that ensures its high standards of sustainability practice are clearly established, promoted, and monitored throughout the entire value chain.

Part of this work includes auditing all our Tier 1 suppliers to assess the key sustainability risks in our supply chain, including understanding carbon emissions and climate change risks related to projects and the materials we specify. As well as working to reduce risks in our supply chain, we have committed to not specify products or use suppliers who cannot comply with our rigorous Supplier Code of Conduct.

We have worked with sustainability consultants to develop a comprehensive Materials Sustainability Guide to help our designers understand the impacts of different materials, allowing our team to better design solutions that consider issues including energy and carbon, human health and wellbeing, and the end of life of materials - promoting their longevity.

Have a Positive Impact Upon People and The Community

We understand that sustainability extends well beyond environmental concerns. It encompasses social responsibility as well and we believe that our people are our best asset.

Our objectives include advocating equality and respectful working conditions, engaging with our employees on developing our sustainability strategy, eliminating modern slavery in supply chains, and engaging with the community to foster lasting impacts.

We also support emerging artists through The David Collins Foundation and are a proud member of United in Design.
